There’s a level of restraint in how he lives his life, with order and routine, and then there’s this juxtaposition of where he goes in his mind with these fantasy moments.ĪD: What served as the inspiration for the LIFE offices? Did you have reference materials? What I think is equally interesting is giving clues to Walter as a person: what he allows himself or doesn't allow himself, visual cues in his life or in his apartment. There are a lot of signals or clues to things that happen in his daydreams and his aspirations. JM: There’s the notion that a lot of the imagery becomes the fuel for his daydreams or for the life he’s not living. AD spoke with Mann about how he made Walter Mitty’s dream world a reality. ![]() The task of creating these diverse environments fell to production designer Jeff Mann ( Tropic Thunder, Mr. His trip takes him from the LIFE offices to a run-down pub in Greenland to a fishing boat on the North Sea to an Icelandic volcano to the hills of Afghanistan. When the negative for the cover photo goes missing, Mitty sets off on the first adventure of his uneventful life to track down famed photographer Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) and in the process try to win the affections of his coworker Cheryl Melhoff (Kristen Wiig). This time around, rather than an aging Connecticut husband, Mitty is a single New Yorker who has spent his career dutifully working in the photo archives of LIFE magazine, which is set to print its final issue. Walter Mitty, James Thurber’s classic character who has become synonymous with fantastical daydreams, embarks on a new set of adventures in the upcoming film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, directed by and starring Ben Stiller.
